This project involved a complete restoration of a large second-story wood deck in the Austin area. The original structure had extensive rot, structural weakness, and improper framing connections that compromised safety.
Initial ConditionThe deck boards were severely weathered and deteriorated. Once we removed the surface boards, deeper structural issues became clear:
- Rotted joists and beams
- Improper beam splices over stone columns
- Old fasteners and framing nails pulling out
- Water damage at ledger and support areas
- Structural movement and sagging sections
Several joists were toe-nailed with large spikes instead of properly secured with structural hardware. Beam connections over the masonry columns lacked proper bearing and reinforcement.
This was not just a cosmetic issue — it required structural correction.
